World Series of Mahjong Coming Next Month
The Wynn Macau resort in Macau will be the host of this year’s World Series of Mahjong event. This will be the second consecutive year the event has taken place. The tournament will begin on September 19th and continue until the 21st. Players must pay $5,000 US to enter the tournament and all players will have the chance to win the minimum, guaranteed price purse of $1 million US.

The tournament is now enrolling players who are twenty one years of age or older. The first one hundred players to enroll for the tournament will receive a HK$5,000 hotel voucher for the Wynn Macau, where the tournament is being held.

This year’s event is expected to draw a larger number of players, since the first annual Series was so successful. Almost 300 players participated in the 2007 event. The CEO of World Mahjong Limited, John Hardyment, stated: “Mahjong players around the world have witnessed the beginning of world championship mahjong, and the considerable prize money available to top players. The news of the four finalists from last year’s event has motivated lots of mahjong players around the world.”

The finalists from last year’s event will be in attendance as well at four well known personalities from Hong Kong, Vanessa Yeung the international model, Ross Lai the Chairman of the Public Relations Association of Hong Kong, Anthony Chum the winner of last year’s International Adventure Race and Angelina Chan the founder of the Hong Kong jewelry brand Steels + Steelo. All love the game of Mahjong and look forward to playing in the event.

Players participating in the World Series of Mahjong can also play in one of the WSOM circuit events that will be held the day before the main tournament. The only event that has been announced so far is the US$1,000 Reach (Riichi) Rules Tournament.
