The Star to host World Series of Mahjong This JuneThe Star located in Sydney is going to play host to the upcoming World Series of Mahjong this June. The event will take place from June 2nd to the 4th and this will be the first time that Australia will host the event. The Star has a brand new Event Centre so this facility will be the perfect place for the mahjong tournament.
Pauline Heng, the CEO of Mahjong Australia as well as the organizer of the event, commented on the change of venue: “Sydney is a fantastic place to have this tournament. Mahjong has become a popular cross cultural sport with a large number of local Chinese and Australians playing on a daily and weekly basis. It requires a combination of skill, mental toughness and, of course, a little luck. People of all ages and cultures enjoy the camaraderie Mahjong games bring and it’s well known that it improves mental abilities.”
The event will have a buy-in of AU$2,300 and will offer an estimated prize pool of AU$1 million. The prize pool will be paid out to the top 64 players of the competition and it has been stated that as much as AU$400,000 could go to the winner. Frederic Luvisutto, the Managing Director of The Star, commented: “The Star is thrilled to host the first World Series of Mahjong Tournament to be held in Australasia. And, with such an attractive prize pool, it is certainly a win for Sydney-siders.”
