Large Group of people arrested for illegal mahjong gambling
Thirty four people were indicted Wednesday morning for illegal gambling on Taipei’s Hankou Street. The police arrested the gamblers at a rented mahjong venue and took a total of NT$111,320 which was NT$76,320 in gambling money and NT$35,000 in profit. Police had received reports that suspicious activities were taking place at the venue so they investigated on February 24th with a warrant in toe. They caught 32 gamblers ranging in ages from twenty one to eighty two who said they were playing mahjong for recreational purposes.
Chen Yuan-qin age fifty six and Chang Zhe-wei age fifty two, where the organizers of the event. Chang would solicit gamblers by offering them free memberships after they underwent an identity check. The gamblers then had to exchange NT$3,000 for chips that could be exchanged for money at the end of the game.
