Hundreds Celebrate Chinese New Year by playing MahjongAbout three hundred people came to the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library in Memphis, Tennessee to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The people gathered to honor 2010 as the Year of the Tiger. Mahjong games took place as well as kung fu and colorful dancers.
Several of the people attending the event enjoyed playing the game of mahjong. The game is very popular in Asian culture as well as all over the world. Attendees could learn the game and then test their skills against other players.
Dance troupes also performed and then those attending were entertained by Kung fu artists. Men and women yielded swords staffs and nunchaku to perform graceful martial arts moves. It was definitely an interesting day especially for those who have never been introduced to the culture.
After playing mahjong and enjoying the various performances, attendees of the Chinese New Year celebration were treated to free food which was donated by several local Asian Restaurants. So attendees were given the opportunity to try different foods they were not accustomed to as well as entertained.
