College Mahjong Competition Opposed by Parents
SMU, the Singapore Management University recently organized a mahjong competition which was enjoyed by many of the college students. However, parents of the students were not happy about the tournament. The Shin Min Daily recently reported close to thirty students signed up for the tournament. This is the second year of the competition and it was first organized by the Recreational Gaming Club. The club has stated they wanted to create a greater awareness among undergraduates about the negativity of gambling.
Parents of the students seem to think that the competition encourages gambling in youth. One parent commented: "It's my first time hearing about a mahjong competition held in a school campus. Although the concept is refreshing, a school should always remain as a conducive place for learning. I feel that introducing a gambling game to students in school is just inappropriate."
