According to state media reports from China, several officials from the Guangdong province have been investigated for gambling away public funds. It has been reported that the officials gambled more than $3 million in public funds.

Fifty three officials of the Communist Party of China were investigated by anti-corruption agents for misusing the money. Six high ranking officials will face punishment or are in jail due to their spending of the funds. The China Daily reported that one official charged was Chen Zhiqiang from Foshan city.

Zhiqiang is believed to have gambled with $1.8 million in Macau over a one year period. The person with the stiffest sentence was Wu Xingkui of Yunfu City. Wu was sentenced to four years in prison after losing $85,000 betting on Mahjong and soccer on trips to Hong Kong.
