After Forty Years Friends Continue Mahjong Game
Mahjong has been known to run in marathon sessions but for five friends the game has been a staple in their life for forty years. The five women have played the game of mahjong and kibitz for more than forty years. The friends enjoy a weekly game and they call themselves best friends. The women work together to host the games by rotating out the job of hostess. The five friends, Jackie Savedow, Shelia Rose, Lorraine Feldman, Edyce Ellis and Barbara Clickstein enjoy the three hour gaming sessions each week.
All five women are members of the National Mahjong League which was founded in 1937. The women pay $7 in annual dues and each member receives an official card of playable hands. The women enjoy good company and laugh and have fun during the games.
For the women it is a tradition and they have passed it on to their children. Many of the women’s daughters and granddaughters play the game now as well.
